The Brazilian movie director Paulo Cesar Saraceni has made three films based on original stories by writer Lucio Cardoso. The first one is "Porto das Caixas", released in 1961. The film is named after a small village in the Rio de Janeiro state. Jobim's sound track features arrangements of the songs "Derradeira Primavera" ("The final spring") and "Valsa do Porto das Caixas" ("Porto das Caixas Waltz"). "Derradeira Primavera" is shown in the movie only in instrumental versions. Later on, Vinicius de Moraes wrote the lyrics. These two songs, although less famous than other ones, rank among the finest of Jobim's compositions. One of the arrangements Jobim wrote for the song "Derradeira Primavera"
is shown in two moments of the movie, played by a small brass band, typical
of Brazilian inland villages. The song is played in the style of a slow
march ("marcha-rancho" in Portuguese). This almost forgotten
arrangement remains like a historical and precious piece of music among
Jobim's works for Brazilian movies. Listen to an excerpt
of the arrangement in Real Audio. |

The second movie is "A Casa Assassinada" ("The murdered house"), from 1971, based on the story "Crônica da Casa Assassinada" ("Chronicle of the murdered house"). The sound track's main motif is the song "Chora Coração" ("Heart Cry"). Saraceni was planning to cut a third movie, based on the novel "O Viajante" ("The Traveller"). But this film was completed only after Tom Jobim's death. In fact, the movie sound track doesn't has Jobim's signature - nevertheless, one of the songs, "Maria é Dia", was written by Tom in partnership with his son Paulo Jobim, with lyrics by Ronaldo Bastos. |
